Immunizations for Senior People and Senior Living in Phoenix, AZ

14 Aug 2018

We are all aware about the fact about the important role vaccinations play in preventing serious illnesses and saving lives. Most people associate immunizations with infants and young children, but vaccines are not just for kids, they are as much important for older adults. Senior people also need some important vaccinations too. Our immune system becomes weaker with age which increases the risk for various illnesses like pneumonia, shingles, flu, etc. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as 70,000 adults lose their life each year from vaccine-preventable illnesses.

It is advisable to go for an assisted living facility if you have a senior family member suffering from mobility issues or memory problems. Being a resident of the Phoenix region in Arizona, you can book a suite at the award-winning Anthem Senior Living where you can expect for your loved one to receive the best form of senior living in Anthem care and support.

It is important for senior people to talk with their physician about immunizations required for them.

Pneumonia Vaccine- Pneumonia is a serious health risk for older adults which is responsible for nearly 50,000 senior deaths each year. It is also the leading cause of hospitalization in Americans over the age of 65. As per the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, seniors should get two vaccines one year apart to better protect them from sepsis (a bacterial infection in the blood), meningitis, and pneumonia. The Prevnar 13 vaccine is generally given to older adults first, followed by the Pneumovax 23 vaccine 12 months later.

Tdap- Tdap is the acronym for tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis which is a booster for adults who might not have received the DTP vaccine when they were a child. It is a one-time shot that can guard against pertussis, also known as whopping cough, which can be deadly in infants.

Shingles Vaccine– Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus. It is a very painful rash and causes skin blisters that can take several weeks or even months to heal. The CDC recommends adults age 50 and over to ask their physician for the Shingrix vaccine instead of the less effective Zostavax immunization. Shingrix is 90 percent more effective at preventing shingles in contrast to Zostavax which has only a 51 percent rate of shingles prevention.

Flu Shot– There are no two ways about the fact of Influenza being a serious health problem for people of all ages, but senior people especially are at higher risk. One can prevent the flu through an annual vaccine. Experts suggest getting vaccinated in October prior to the beginning of the flu season. Remember, almost 90 percent of flu-related deaths each year are in adults over the age of 65.
